Spider Veins Q&A
What are spider veins?
Spider veins are small, discolored veins that are visible through the skin. The veins are often red or purple in color and resemble spider webs. While you can develop spider veins anywhere, they are most common on the face and legs.
The underlying cause of spider veins is valve dysfunction in the veins that carry blood from your legs back to your heart. When a valve doesn’t close properly, blood can flow backwards and pool in the vein, causing enlargement in the vessel.
Risk factors for spider veins can include:
-
Aging
-
Obesity
-
Smoking history
-
Family history
Women may be at a higher risk than men for developing spider veins due to hormone changes that occur with pregnancy, the use of hormone birth control, and menopause.
When should I seek treatment for spider veins?
Not all spider veins require treatment, but many people want to treat them to improve the appearance of their legs.
Dr. Farha recommends that you schedule a diagnostic evaluation at One Vein Clinic if you’re embarrassed by the appearance of spider veins or if the damaged veins cause symptoms like:
-
Itching
-
Bleeding
-
Leg pain
-
Leg swelling
-
Heaviness or achiness in the legs
Ultrasound imaging and other diagnostic tests are available in-office to assess blood circulation in your legs and identify areas of blood vessel damage.
Based on the results of your testing and the severity of your symptoms, Dr. Farha customizes a treatment plan to ease discomfort and improve the appearance of your legs.
How are spider veins treated?
Your treatment plan for spider veins may initially include lifestyle and diet changes to improve the blood circulation in your legs. Dr. Farha may suggest that you wear compression socks and get at least 30 minutes of exercise daily.
If you’re unhappy with the appearance of spider veins or bothered by persistent symptoms, Dr. Farha may recommend:
VenaSeal™
Sclerotherapy
VenaSeal treatments involve an injection of a medical adhesive into the damaged vein to permanently close it. Blood naturally reroutes to nearby, healthy veins without any additional care.
Sclerotherapy is also an injectable therapy to close damaged veins. Dr. Farha injects a chemical agent like the microfoam Varithena® to irritate the vein. The irritation ultimately causes the vein to collapse, and your body absorbs it naturally over time.
