Sclerotherapy Q&A

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure to treat unsightly or painful spider veins or varicose veins.

These damaged, enlarged veins develop due to poor circulation in the veins of your legs. You might also develop varicose veins or spider veins if the vein valves become weak and can no longer keep blood flowing in one direction.

If blood flows backwards, it can pool in the vein and cause an enlargement. Spider veins don’t grow as large or twisted as varicose veins, but they can still cause discomfort and affect how you feel about the appearance of your legs.

How does sclerotherapy works?

Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a chemical agent into the damaged vein. The chemical irritates the vein and eventually causes it to collapse.

Blood from the treated vessels naturally moves into nearby, healthy veins. After the treated vein collapses, your body absorbs it without further treatment.

Dr. Farha uses Varithena®, a prescription microfoam, to close damaged veins and improve blood circulation in your legs. He can often achieve your desired results after just one treatment but some larger veins may need additional injections to fully collapse.

What can I expect during sclerotherapy treatment?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that One Vein Clinic provides in-office on an outpatient basis.

During your treatment, Dr. Farha provides a local anesthetic to numb the injection site. He uses a fine needle to inject precise amounts of Varithena microfoam into the damaged vein. If you have more than one damaged vein, he can treat them all during the same appointment.

It can take up to six weeks to see the full benefit of sclerotherapy for spider veins and up to four months to see the results of varicose vein treatment. While it’s possible to develop new spider veins and varicose veins after treatment, continuing to wear compression socks and get daily exercise can lower your risk for additional vein damage.

To find out if sclerotherapy is right for you, call One Vein Clinic or book an appointment online today.
